Description of the genus

Annual herbs, or suffrutices with annual stems from woody rootstocks. Vegetative indumentum of fine flagelliform hairs. Leaves alternate, narrowly oblanceolate to elliptic, somewhat discolorous, gland-dotted. Capitula heterogamous, radiate, few-many, solitary and terminal on branches sometimes also subsessile along branches, subtended by leaf-like bracts. Phyllaries numerous. Receptacle deeply alveolate. Ray-florets corollas deep-red or creamy-white; ray erect, 3-fid, inner lip wanting; ovary rudimentary, pappus of many narrow scales. Disk-florets deep-red or creamy-white, actinomorphic. Fruit achenes subcylindric, 10-ribbed with numerous stiff white hairs; pappus several-seriate of numerous spreading narrowly lanceolate scales.

Worldwide: 4 species in tropical Africa.
