Description of the genus

Terrestrial herbs. Stems unbranched, leafy. Inflorescence terminal. Flowers resupinate. Sepals and petals free. Lip united to column at base, 3-lobed, side-lobes pectinately-toothed; spur cylindric. Column erect. Pollinaria 2. Stigmatic arms divided into 2 elongated branches, the lower fertile and capitate, the upper sterile and horn-like. Differs from Habenaria in having branched stigmatic arms.

Derivation of name: from the Greek kentron, a spur and stigma, referring to the horn-like upper branch of the flower’s stigmatic processes

Worldwide: 5 species in tropical Africa

Tanzania: 1 taxon.
