Description:
Slender perennial herb, 15-45 cm. Bulb solitary or clustered, surrounded by dense layers of fibrous leaf-base remnants. Leaves 3-25 cm, linear, glabrous. Flowers 2.5-5 mm, shortly pedicellate, green, the perianth and stigmas tinged with purple; pedicels elongating in fruit Outer perianth segments 2.5-4 mm, ovate, entire; inner shorter and more obtuse, sometimes irregularly toothed on the upper margin. Fruit 8.5-14 mm, narrowly lanceolate to elliptic, composed of 3 fertile mericarps alternating with 3 much reduced sterile ones.

Notes: According to some authorities the true T. bulbosa is restricted to South Africa and material from tropical Africa, previously included under that name should now treated as a separate species called T. milnei Horn.

Habitat: Marshes and seasonally flooded grasslands.
